In the picture above you see a rather large pile of ‘stuff’. This pile of ‘stuff’ is so important for me to keep on top of using during the winter season. Why? Because throughout winter your skin goes through the freezing cold of the outside to the warmth of your house when you get in. It gets hit by wind, cold temperatures, rain and snow, then you get inside and instantly hit it with the heating, hot water and rubbing it dry with towels. Due to all your skin goes through during this time of year it’s SO important you take your best care of it. But not just your face, your body too.
You need to make sure you replenish the moisture in your face as the quick mixture of temperatures can really dry it out. But it’s so important to make sure your skin is clean and clear first! There’s no point rubbing moisturiser into dirty skin, all hell will break loose! So once you’ve removed any make up, make sure you cleanse your skin thoroughly to remove any excess, one make up wipe only does half the job, cleanser does the other half. I find soap-free cleansers are the absolute best. Soap holds Alkalis usually in the form of sodium, which can cause damage and reduce moisture in the skin, so it’s best to steer clear of it on your face. Especially in winter!
With the elements hitting you’re skin as they do this time of year, anyone who’s anyone is prone to dry skin, even the oiliest of skin (trust me on that one). Dry skin, if not ex-foliated properly can become a hoarder or bacteria and cause problems with your pores, so it’s key to make sure you’re exfoliating probably every other day. Or use a gentle exfoliator lightly every day.
Ex foliating is quite abrasive and rough against your skin obviously, so it’s so important you moisturise afterwards, otherwise it’s not going to benefit the appearance of your skin at all. Arguably the dry skin will just come back worse, become tight and crack. What I find helps, as your T-zone is quite oil prone still, is to continue to keep up with your T-zone cleansers/lotions, to help your complexion even more thoroughly.
One awesome trick I regularly use is having a face massager (you’ll see in the picture it’s the weird pointy thing on a stick). I use this some nights with my cleanser on, as massaging the skin helps bring the blood to the surface, increasing the repair-ability of your skin tissue. So it’s a big help with dry/cracked skin and spots too.
Now with your body. We often wrap up like crazy in the winter, which can mean our skin is very hot, a bit sweaty and doesn’t have much time to breath. So it’s incredibly important you give your skin a super deep clean when you jump in the shower on an evening. I like to use a thick creamy body wash, as it’s so relaxing and comforting. Or if I’m in the bath, a creamy bath gel with a refreshing scent is always a winner! You also want to make sure you’re skin is on top form in the winter, as it’s not always used to being that warm and tucked away under layers upon layers of clothes, so exfoliating is important here too. Just not as often, I usually do a couple of times a week maybe three times, but use a scrubbing mitten to help buff my skin too. Also, don’t forget you’re feet! They have it the worst and they’re working continuously, so make sure you’ve got a strong foot scrub to hand and you should probably use that a little more regularly!
As before, once you’ve ex-foliated you MUST moisturise, otherwise you’re simply doing further damage to your skin and it’s going to begin to find it difficult to rep,air itself. Dry skin = itchy skin. That’s a difficult one to recover from if you don’t begin to moisturise quickly.
Finally, don’t forget you’re hair!!! With this one, I wouldn’t wash as often, as the natural oils will help protect your hair. I’m not saying walk around like a grease monster, but don’t be washing you’re hair for the sake of it. When you do wash it, apply some conditioner to the bottom 3/4’s once you’re out of the shower to aid in protecting. Or, use a decent hair masque, which is made for helping build up strong hair and use it a little more regularly than usual. I use mine every 2 weeks in this weather. Try and avoid drying your hair too thoroughly too, it just dries it out more.
