Barry M Gelly Hi Shine Nail Paint Review

wpid-20150221_102833-1.jpg

Hey Guys!!!!!,

Today I really wanted to do a review on my experience with trying out Barry M’s Gelly Hi Shine Polish.

The Barry M brand is definitely one of my favourite drug store/low cost nail polish ranges and man do they have some different styles on their shelves! Every time I go to the shop I see they’ve brought out a new type of polish range. I love their variety of colours and they have an amazing choice of glitters and effects polish, so as you can imagine I was very excited to try the Gelly polish!

The Gelly Hi Shine range boasts “Hi shine Gel effect Nail Paint provides an extra glossy finish”. So upon standard basic expectations I was hoping for a lovely, extra shiny, extra glossy, strong looking polish. Something that looks very similar to the appearance of gel nails. After all, it is called ‘Gelly’ Hi Shine. And I certainly got…

*DrumRollPlease*

NONE OF THE ABOVE!
Nothing.Nill.Nought.Zero.DIDDLYSQUAT!

This polish range, is exactly the same as any other Barry M polish I have ever used. Ever. There is no difference between this Gelly Hi Shine range and his bog standard nail polish range. In complete honesty this is actually a lot worse.

Firstly, you’re provided with this expectation, that this polish range is going to provide you with a much shinier, ‘Gel nail’ appearance with arguably the look of a higher end, higher quality polish. But it’s not. It looks just like the original Barry M range, if not, a bit cheaper. Why, I hear you ask? Well, do let me explain…
When applying this polish the first layer goes on like watered down nail varnish, kinda like the ones you got in those cheap £3.00 polish sets from a brand you’d never heard of when you were about 7. It takes it’s sweet time to dry, then the second coat goes on just about as bad as the first, so on you go to your third, (when it’s dried that is). Once onto your third coat, the most times I’ve tried it, it generally looks pretty poor by this point. The reason being is simply because you have to put so many layers on due to the polish being so thin, that by the time it appears the colour it’s supposed to be, it has this really thick layered polish look, but somehow still manages to look thin. Like that polish you had once that got super thick because you’ve had it forever, and took to it with nail polish remover to thin it out and clearly over did it (don’t use nail polish remover to thin nail polish by the way! It seriously damages your polish and causes it to separate, not thin. You can buy nail polish thinner from a lot of drug stores or Sally’s, it’s a more gentle, tailored treatment for thickened polish).
Not to help the matter, it’s more expensive than the standard polish AND it chips with in about 5 hours of wearing it. I don’t mean a small chip either, I mean half your bloody nail! It doesn’t last two minutes and I’ve tried this with 3 different top coats, still with no change.

I genuinely find this polish range categorically pointless, except the colours. There are some beautiful colours, but they should bring them out in the original Nail Paint range and sack off the Gelly Hi Shine range in my opinion. It’s painfully thin, no shinier than their other polishes, looks horribly thick when finished, chips like there’s no tomorrow and takes a life time to apply due to the mass of layers you have to put on to attempt to make it look less like a streaky mess! Why bother?!

I am 100% super disappointed with this range from Barry M (just in case you couldn’t tell) to say I was so excited to try it. I certainly won’t be purchasing it again and in honesty, do not recommend wasting your money on. Although I do recommend every other range of his, as the others are faultless.

I hope this was helpful to you guys, I know it’s been a bit of a slate-fest but I strongly disapprove of people trying to butter up and entise people into spending money on a product that you wouldn’t waste the money on yourself, especially following a bad experience with it.
I hope you’ve all had a fab start to the new year, well not so new any more I guess. It’s March already!!!
See you Thursday!

LOTD: Simple Day to Day Look & Winged Liner

wpid-2015-01-06-20.56.52.jpg.jpeg

Hey m’lovelies!

Today is LOTD day, and this one is my easy peasy, day to day make up that suits everyone. It’s quick to do, so it’s great for on the go, in a rush, early morning make up AND great for giving you some extra time in bed! I wear this look for work a lot, but the great thing about it is, you can doll it up with different lipsticks, some extra liner on your water line and some stronger bronzing and blush effects. BUT today, it’s super simple day (kind of like my brain at times).

So on my face I have:

  • MAC’s Studio Finish Concealer under my eyes and covering blemishes
  • MAC’s Studio Fix Foundation in NW15
  • Benefit’s Boing in shade 2, under my eyes to even out and add to the coverage
  • MAC’s Studio Finish Powder in NW18
  • Benefit’s HOOLA Bronzer lightly under my cheek bones, around my temples and lightly on my jaw line towards the back
  • MAC’s Melba Blusher very lightly on my cheek bones

On my Lips:

  • MAC’s Viva Glam 2 from the Viva Glam collection

On my Eyes:

  • Burnout from Urban Decays Naked3 Palette, only on my lids
  • Maybelline’s Eyestudio Drama Gel Liner in Intense Black, I have applied this in more of an inward curve shape as you can see. I haven’t stuck with the typical cat eye winged liner, I think for tired eye’s this can really wake them up and give them great shape and body. I have lightly extended past the edge of my eye creating about a 2cm length wing, which I have brought under my lower lashes too, to widen and waken the eyes.
  • Maybelline’s Rocket Volum Mascara

And that’s it!

Honestly, this takes me between 5-7 minutes to do on a morning if that. It’s a great time saving but beautiful look, it doesn’t look like it’s taken such a short time which is an awesome little trick to keep up your sleeve!

Ways to edit the look slightly:

You can cut the gel liner out and go for a deep/dark shade which covers your whole lid instead, this looks just as gorgeous. Keep OR remove the gel liner and add in some eye liner on your water line. Or change up the shade of lipstick to make it into a bit more of a subtle occasional look, with some reds/purples/deep pinks.

Hope you liked this guys, let me know if it saves you any time like it saves me, I love it!

MAC Viva Glam 1 Lipstick – Review

wpid-20141230_141936.jpg

Heyeyeyeyey!

Hope you guys new years have set off positively, mine has been interesting. Yes already. The wonders of the world I live in. I shall explain all on #SundayFundayCatchUp tomorrow…

SO I wanted to do a review on this MAC lipstick I bought the other day (with the vouchers I had in the back of my purse from last Christmas which I had forgotten about. MWHAHAHAHAHA!), when I popped out to the shops with my mamma. I originally went to get Ruby Woo & Kinda Sexy, neither of which they had in stock. An impossible sin I know. So I ended up with this one and another, which the review is coming soooooooon.

One down side is that their marketing team either had a day off or had a total brain fart on the day they were labelling the Viva Glam collection. The names Viva Glam 1, Viva Glam 2 etc is not exactly up to MAC’s normal standards of product naming abilities. But hey ho, everyone needs a day off right?! But otherwise, all is well on the horizon…

The swatch is below:
wpid-20141230_142008-1.jpg

When I was in the shop I was asking one of the girls there for a hand choosing a really gorgeous deep red colour. She immediately picked out this one and described it the only way I think it can be: A Super Vampy Red. Honestly when I put it on and look at the lipstick I’m like lost for any form of descriptive words other than ‘vampy’.But it really is. It’s a very deep, thick dark red, with some slightly browny purple undertones, which really accentuates your lips making them look as full bodied as ever. It’s matte, sort of. It’s matte but with a slight sheen to it, so it’s almost matte, which sounds a bit odd. Is that odd? It’s a bit odd. But awesome!

Due to it’s matteness (sort of matteness), it can tend to dry out your lips a little bit. So after you’ve worn it, put a good layer of lip treatment on it, whether it’s a balm or Vaseline or whatever takes your fancy. If you wear matte a lot, keep your lips moisturised, matte lipstick likes to think it’s a dehydrated fish, so balm up!

This specific shade looks beautiful with lots of dark eye shadow tones and a nude/beige blush. Or on a more day to day look, with thick winged eye liner and black liner on your water line, keeping it simple but gorgeous.

Regardless of your hair colour, how pale or dark your skin is, your eye colour, clothing style that day, this lipstick will work. Trust me. It’s so adaptable and works all round. It may be dark, and more for what some may wear on an evening when you’re getting all dolled up, but personally I love shades like this and wear them whenever I can, so go for it, be a bit more daring and whack it on for the day. You’ll turn heads I promise!

Seriously go out and buy yourself some. This is my favourite lipstick I’ve ever owned hands down.

Hope you liked this review guys, let me know what you think!

NOTD: Christmas Snowy Glitter Christmas Scene

wpid-20141218_194522.jpg

IT’S CHRISTMASSSSSSSSSSS!

Therefore it’s my run up to Christmas nail design posts! Starting with my snowy Christmas scene nails. This one is a little more intricate than my usual ones – I went all out on this design – for what I’m normally capable of anyway ha.
This is a more time consuming design but not difficult or hard work to do at all, which is awesome!

For this look I used:

A navy blue base, a dark blue glitter, a white, a white glitter to cover the white polish, black for the snowman’s eyes, smile and buttons, an orange for his nose and a red and green for the baubles on the Christmas tree (but you could use which ever colours you like for that bit :))
I also used a large dotting tool for the snow drops, a very small dotting tool for the baubles and snowman’s face & buttons and a small brush tool for the Christmas tree’s.

Taking your navy blue, apply 2-3 coats and once dry and one good coat of your blue glitter. Once this has dried, take your white and apply a wobbly French manicure type line to the edge of your nail. Don’t make it too straight as it’s supposed to look like snow has fallen naturally and unevenly. You might need two coats of this depending on how thick your white polish is. Then whilst that’s drying, take your large dotting tools and apply your snow drops to all of your nails but only to 2/3rds of the nail – avoiding your ring finger. You need to remember to leave room for your Christmas tree. Whilst you have your large dotting tool to hand, apply a large blob to your ring finger on the line of your snowy tip and a smaller one on top, depending on the length of your nails you may be able to do 3.
Now for the tree. Take your small brush tool and your white polish. Paint on the tree by doing a small flick out left from the point of the tree top, then again from the tree top out right. Then again left from where the point the two flicks meet and right from the same point again. Then a short line vertically downwards for the trunk of the tree all the way into your snowy tip.

By now, your snow drops, tips and snowman should be dry, so go back over them with your white glitter to add some more sparkle and magic to the look. Take your small dotting tool whilst this is drying and add your baubles, I alternated mine red and green for extra Christmassyness but you can use any colour you fancy!

When your snowman is completely dry add on his buttons, eye’s, smiley face and carrot nose (you can even add a top hat/scarf if you have long enough nails for that sort of space!)

ALWAYS finish with your top coat and ONLY when you’re nails are completely dry!

I hope you guys like this tutorial, let me know if you did!

I hope you have an amazing Christmas!

Love&Hugs

NOTD: Christmas Glistening Snow in the Evening

wpid-20141221_194141.jpg

Hey Guys – it’s Christmas in 2 days :O

This nail design is ridiculously easy but looks so SO SO beautiful. It’s like glistening snow in the evening. Gorgeous! I simply used 3 nail shades on top of my base and top coat, all of which are drug store products. Win!

I used:

  • OPI Base & Top Coat
  • Barry M Blueberry
  • No7 In The Stars
  • Barry M Diamond Silver Glitter

After my base coat I applied 3 thin layers of Blueberry. It’s one from the ‘Gelly Hi-Shine’ range, so it’s quite thin initially, but gives a great finish!

Once they are completely dry, I applied 1 layer of In The Stars – which is a lovely shimmery/sparkly clear coat, so it just adds a bit of extra twinkle to the look. Then finished it with one layer of Diamond Silver Glitter. Once completely dry, add your top coat.

This is such a simple easy tutorial and finishes with such a beautiful, wintry look. Although you could definitely wear this for an occasional look.

Let me know if you like this or give it a try! (Sorry about the edges – I forgot to clean them up!)

Merry Christmas you beauties!

Love&Hugs

#SundayFundayCatchUp

Heeeeeeeey!

So catch up time! I need to apologise for missing last weeks. I’ve been so busy with things lately, trying to sort out the flat, christmas, arranging travel for Christmas etc I haven’t had time to sit down. Crazy!
On with the past week…
It’s been a nice wind down week for Christmas really. I’ve been stupidly excited to get to see MockingJay Part 1 and that the new Annie movie is coming out! EEK! I was ecstatic to find out that Caroline Flack had won Strictly Come Dancing – talk about deserving it!!! Although I’m bouncing off the walls at a much slower rate when Ben Haenow won X Factor, he did well and all that but he wasn’t Fleur and certainly wasn’t Andrea. Talk about a completely backwards result. Eugh. I popped out and indulged a little bit for myself for a change, I got myself some gorgeous new MAC lipsticks and some new nail polishes which is exciting (haul blog to come!) and went back to brown!
wpid-img_20141206_182201.jpg No more red hair!
I FINALLY went to the Alchemist! I’ve been desperate to go since it opened but me being me refuses to pay £20 for 2 cocktails, but seeing as though it’s cChristmas Me and my mam decided it was time to treat ourselves so we dug into these – my beloved woowoo and the hot and cold espresso (which I am intensely jealous I didn’t get, it was scrummy and suuuuper impressive when they made it!)
wpid-20141205_154707.jpgwpid-20141205_154545-1.jpg
wpid-20141205_153028.jpgwpid-20141205_153033.jpg
That was followed by a gorgeous meal to finish a fantastic day of shopping off!I finished my Christmas shopping which I managed to forget ’til the last minute. No surprise there! We also had our little Christmas day today as I wont be home for Christmas, so we’ve had such an amazing, lovely day together. We cooked something yummy and opened all of our presents. My favourite thing about Christmas is watching people open the presents I bought for them, I love the surprise and happiness.

Christmas drinks were in order for the last day of work. Which included many a beer, wine and vodka. And got carried away with the Christmas Duck…
wpid-20141219_215553.jpgwpid-2014-12-20-18.28.48.png.png
So you can imagine how much I needed the vat of coffee I devoured the next morning…
wpid-20141220_100613.jpg

Regardless of my painful (understatement) head, I managed some therapy at the hairdressers and dragged myself out on a lovely long walk. You can’t beat the way the sky looks at this time of year. It doesn’t come anywhere close the rest of the year I mean seriously, just look at the view I got to take in:
wpid-20141207_144620.jpg
PRRRIIIDDDEEEEEE!!!!!!!

Minus the hangovers, excessive Christmas drinking and some sensible stuff inbetween, I’ve had my head deeply burrowed in my particularly festive book; I Heart Christmas. This book by Lindsey Kelk is perfect for you girly, romantic, Christmas lovers out there. I got mine second hand super cheap from Amazon. I absolutely recommend this book 100%.

Some gorgeous songs have come out the past week, and some of my Christmas faves have made an epic reappearance – Fairytale of New York and Stop the Cavalry. Christmas is not complete with out them. We just need a bit of snow now! Not long, it’s basically 3 days (can you tell I’m counting down? 😉

Hope you guys are in for an amazing Christmas time, check out my blog tomorrow for my Christmas nail designs. I have 3 major Christmas nail blogs for the run up to Christmas on Monday, Tuesday AND Wednesday! 2 tutorials and 1 about my staple shades, so stay tuned! I’m going to go dance around my house to ‘Fairytale of New York’ now…

Love&Hugs&FestiveWishes!
